Towards Universal Design: Enhancing LPU-Cavite ARC Library Services Through Assistive Technology

Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the integration and impact of assistive technology (AT) in creating an inclusive and accessible academic library environment, focusing on the Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite. The research highlights the role that AT plays in enhancing learning opportunities. By examining the experiences of students with disabilities through the aid of Universal Design (UD) principles, the study underscores how accessible environments benefit all users, regardless of ability. The research aims to: (1) identify obstacles preventing students with disabilities from accessing library services at LPU Cavite, (2) explore how assistive technology can address these accessibility issues, and (3) gather recommendations from library users to improve assistive technologies and services. Several barriers were identified that hinder effective AT implementation. These include limited access to physical and digital resources, as well as inadequate training on AT tools such as screen readers, text-to-speech software, and adaptive keyboards. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with five students with disabilities, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and motor impairments, to explore these challenges. Thematic analysis revealed issues such as the ARC website’s lack of compatibility with screen readers and a scarcity of alternative formats for physical materials. Despite these challenges, the study found that proper AT implementation greatly enhances the academic experience of students with disabilities. Participants emphasized the need to raise awareness of AT tools and provide training sessions. Recommendations include organizing awareness campaigns, expanding accessible materials, and offering workshops to ensure students with disabilities benefit fully from library services. This research highlights the transformative role of AT in fostering inclusivity in academic libraries and calls for ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and support for students with disabilities
