Grit, Mathematical Disposition and Mathematics Performance of Grade 11 Students

Abstract:

This study aimed to investigate the interrelationship among grit, mathematical disposition and mathematics performance of 116 grade 11 students of Tuan Datu Hadji Abdullah Nuño Memorial Integrated School. The study employed the descriptive quantitative research design. Findings revealed that respondents have an average level of grit, low positive mathematical disposition and satisfactory mathematics performance. Agri-Fishery Arts (AFA) students were grittier than General Academic Strand (GAS)students with respect to consistency of interest (Grit-CI). In terms of perseverance of effort (Grit-PE), GAS students were grittier than AFA. However, there was no significant difference in their general grit in mathematics. Yakan and Tausug students were significantly grittier than Sama-Bangingih in Grit-PE. In terms of sex, female students significantly indicated a greater level of mathematical disposition in the aspect of appreciation. When compared to older students, sixteen- and seventeen-year-old learners significantly indicated a greater level of mathematical disposition on inventiveness, metacognition, usefulness, appreciation. Similarly, they greatly outperformed older age groups in mathematics performance. Students from middle-income families outperformed students from lower-income in mathematics by a wide margin. Furthermore, this study revealed a low to moderate but significant relationships among grit, mathematical disposition and mathematics performance. Finally, this study found that grit and mathematical disposition were significant predictors of mathematics performance with a regression model of y =1.90X1+3.35X2+61.34. This suggests that those who have higher level of mathematical disposition and grittier in mathematics are more likely to report better performance in mathematics. It is recommended that math educators should consider on developing grit and mathematical disposition aside from knowledge and skills.
